Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Abstract
F. Makino and the Ginga Team, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Tokyo, telex: "Further measurements of the hard x-ray source in the region of SN 1987A (cf. IAUC 4447) yield a new error box of dimensions 0.2 x 0.3 deg surrounding SN 1987A, and we suggest identification of the source with the supernova. The source intensity increased steadily through July and August, but the latest observations during Sept. 24-29 show that the source intensity was less by 10-30 percent than in early September." Visual magnitude estimates: Oct. 4.57 UT, 5.3 (A. C. Beresford, Adelaide, South Australia); 6.50, 5.6 (D. A. J. Seargent, The Entrance, N.S.W.); 8.5, 5.4 (R. H. McNaught, Coonabarabran, N.S.W.); 9.58, 5.3 (Beresford).
